This is a short graphic novel written by Neil Gaiman, and illustrated by Dave McKean. A narrator tells how a small child in Portsmouth is taken by his father to be treated by an osteopath who once was employed by Al Capone. The nature of the narrator's relationship with his father, the tales the osteopath tells, and the disturbing events that follow are partially obscured by the narrator's imperfect recall of things he was not old enough to fully comprehend at the time. When this was originally published in 1987, it was in Black & White; This is the first American color edtion.It was McKean's first published work in comics. Though drawn by McKean in shades of blue, brown, and grey, when it was first published by Escape Books in 1987, it was printed in black-and-white. Dave McKean is an illustrator, photographer, comic book artist, graphic designer, filmmaker, and musician. His work incorporates drawing, painting, photography, collage, found objects, digital art, and sculpture. Neil Gaiman's work has been honored with many awards internationally, including the Newbery and Carnegie Medals. His books and stories have also been honored with four Hugos, two Nebulas, one World Fantasy Award, four Bram Stoker Awards, six Locus Awards, two British Science Fiction Association Awards, one British Fantasy Award, three Geffens, one International Horror Guild Award, and two Mythopoeic Awards.
