THE WESTERN ART OF HAROLD VON SCHMIDT

Artist Harold von Schmidt stood at the pinnacle of illustration for over half a century. His work, including paintings, adorned the pages of prestigious magazines such as the Saturday Evening Post, Cosmopolitan, and American, for an impressive 20-year span. His art was also featured in notable publications like Willa Cather's book, Death Comes for the Archbishop, and he designed the 1960 Pony Express commemorative stamp. Von Schmidt's contributions to American art include twelve Gold Rush scenes for the California governor's offices and five Civil War paintings for the United States Military Academy at West Point. He reflected on his success by saying he was fortunate to experience the cowboy life firsthand and developed a deep understanding of the land, the Native Americans, and the working aspects of cowboys through his experiences.
