THE VADEBONCOEUR COLLECTION OF IMAGES: Issue Four

This issue features the art of Frank Craig, Maxfield Parrish, Arthur Rackham, Franklin Booth, Edmund Dulac, Katherine S. Dodge, Charles Robinson (7 color pieces), Sarah S. Stilwell (2 lovely pages), J.C. Leyendecker, F.X. Leyendecker, Fortunino Matania, Franz von Bayros, J. Scott Williams, Harry Rountree, Herbert Draper and Solomon J. Solomon. The "inkspot" features three pages and a short biography of Daniel Vierge (Pablo de Segovia, 1892--the first book ever reproduced direct from the artist's pen drawings). The two color Rackhams here are from the nearly unknown The Book of Betty Barber, 1920, and colored by none other than Harry Rountree. Four full page color plates present art from Franz von Bayro's most desirable work, The Divine Comedy. N.C. Wyeth gets two pages and 8 illustrations; Franklin Booth's COLOR work is here from Flying Islands of the Night and The Prince and the Pauper. Two lovely OVAL Edmund Dulac works from the French magazine, I'Illustration, in the same style he used for Poe's The Bells. The artwork here is chosen for its obscurity, coming from sources never previously collected. And for its content, based on Jim's choice of interesting, well-drawn images from his vast collection, one of the finest in existence. Fantasy is just one theme, knights and fairies and beautiful women all appear here, but you also will find gorgeous drawings and paintings of everything in between. Mythology, history, anthropomorphic animals, humor, erotica. Additionally, Jim worked very hard after scanning each image to make it the best one possible, correcting reproduction flaws and other shortcomings that might have happened in the original printing. So with no alteration, no enhancement, each image is nonetheless improved and most often better reproduced than it was first. Condition: Very Fine.
