The Photographer and the Nude by Herbert Rittlinger was originally written in German and first published in an English translation by Focal Press in 1961, this book is a guide to art nude photography as it used to be practiced in the 1930s, 40s and 50s. Naked female or rarely, male figures were only considered appropriate when depicted in natural outdoor settings or artists' studios, and were expected to conform to fixed classical standards of beauty.
