Greg Theakston published this second installment of his biography of the King, Jack Kirby. The Early Years 1948-1960. In 1946, Joe Simon was set to go back to work after returning from DC where he was stationed with the Coast Guard.  In 1940, Kirby and Simon created the highly successful superhero character Captain America for Timely Comics, the predecessor of Marvel Comics. Kirby regularly teamed with Simon, creating numerous characters for that company and for National Comics Publications, later to become DC Comics. Wanting to start where they left off, Simon convinced Alfred Harvey to hire him and Kirby to Harvey Publications.

Jack Kirby's birth name was Jacob Kurtzberg. He was and still is widely regarded as one of the medium's major innovators and one of its most prolific and influential creators. He grew up in New York City and learned to draw cartoon figures by tracing characters from comic strips and editorial cartoons. He entered the nascent comics industry in the 1930s, drawing various comics features under different pen names, including Jack Curtiss, before ultimately settling on Jack Kirby.
