Description

This could be the best drawn of all the early 1950s westerns. Cowboys were exploding across television, Saturday morning serials, and movies. A trend was seized upon by top-tier publisher Ziff-Davis who introduced The Hawk, "Fighting Marshall of the American West." With skill, courage, an honorable attitude, and nearly superhuman speed and ability with his six-shooter. Ziff-Davis spent more on their artists than nearly any other pre-code company, and it’s clearly evident here. They got the best out of their creators. The Hawk would last 12 issues, until 1955, and would also boast artwork by Matt Baker before the run ended. The title moved over to pubisher St. John with #4, where Baker will come in during the next volume. So, saddle up your horse and lasso your very own copy of this comic presented to you just like the original from cover to cover! Additional artists include Alex Kotzky, George Tuska, and Al Carreno, along with all stars Dan Barry, Murphy Anderson, Joe Kubert and Carmine Infantino!!! Covers for #1-3 are by Clarence Doore. This outstanding painter was hired to replace Norman Saunders, who quit Ziff-Davis over artistic disputes. Doore was a prolific creator, who started out in pulps in the 1940s, on dozens of top-tier titles. For Ziff-Davis he painted  24 covers for the likes of G.I. Joe and other titles. He went on to work in men's magazines and to draw digest covers, adventure books, and to teach in the renowned Famous Artists School.
