Century Guild presents this new deluxe edition of their sold-out book, Carl Otto Czeschka Illustrations. Enlarged and expanded with additional artworks, this new edition features over eighty pages of rare illustrations captured directly from original turn-of-the-century source materials in their museum archive — with historical text by author Thomas Negovan — in a storybook-inspired presentation that celebrates the beautiful design traditions of late 19th century Austrian and German children's fairy tale books. Carl Otto Czeschka is recognized by art historians as a pivotal presence in the development of art in the 20th century; he started his career at the beginning of the Art Nouveau movement in Austria and quickly became one of its most celebrated illustrators. By 1908, Czeschka had moved with his colleagues Gustav Klimt and Koloman Moser into a style of Modernism called the "Vienna Secession," that heralded the coming of Art Deco. As one of the major figures in this movement, his designs are celebrated and presented in major museums worldwide, and his early work with its bold lines and whiplash style are some of the most recognizable inspirations for the psychedelic rock poster movement of the Haight-Ashbury era. This beautiful hardcover book features a faux leather cover with foil stamping, a Smythe-sewn binding for durability, and is printed on high quality fine art paper with gilt edges.
