THE DRAGONS OF PARIS

I quite like this, but then everything I've seen from Sfar and Sandoval I have liked. - Bud. What if dragons invaded Paris during the Belle Époque? Popular French writer Joann Sfar and Eisner nominated illustrator Tony Sandoval weave their imaginations into a canvas of adventures, battles, sacrifices, love, and humor. For thousands of years, dragons have lived hidden from everyone, sealed in statues and gargoyles throughout the city. Legend has it that only the sacrifice of a being of great magic can protect Paris from their wrath and maintain their slumber. But when a roguish, brawling Hawaiian princess rescues a dying mermaid from ritual sacrifice, the malevolent shadow of dragons grows once again over the City of Lights. From the catacombs to Notre-Dame, a romance is born under the awakening of a thousand-year-old evil. Humor and tenderness, action (our mermaid is a terror with a sword and our Hawaiian Princess is a beefy brawler with a strong right hook) and much more. Joann Sfar  (a man, despite the name--it's French of course) is considered one of the most important artists of the new wave of Franco-Belgian comics, though he has rejected the assertion that he, along with artists such as Christophe Blain, Marjane Satrapi, and Lewis Trondheim, sought to create an alternative scene or a new movement in comics. Many of his comics were published by L'Association, which was founded in 1990 by Jean-Christophe Menu and six other artists. He also worked with many of the group's main artists, e.g. David B. and Lewis Trondheim. The Donjon series, which he created with Trondheim, has a cult following in many countries. Other works include The Rabbit's Cat and Little Vampire. Tony Sandoval is a Mexican artist and writer known for distinctive, atmospheric storytelling and surreal, dreamlike illustrations. Notable title: Domboy, Watersnakes, 1000 Storms (which we handled and I quite liked also). He has been nominated for six Eisner Awards, three for Best Artist. Watersnakes received three Eisner nominations in 2019.
