One of the most iconic superheros of the Golden Age is finally collected. His costume is one of the most striking of any in the 1940s. Issues #12 and #13 feature bondage covers, and most are classic World War II covers. With his origin in Nedor's Exciting #9, we have here all of his very first appearances. He also got his own title which lasted 27 issues, from the end of 1942 to 1949.
Bob Benton was a pharmacist working on a tonic to pep people up, who developed "formic ethers" instead, thanks to a comment made by his new assistant Tim Roland, inspiring him along a new path. Inhaling the vapors from his discovery granted him superhuman strength, which he used to become the crimefighter the Black Terror, battling hoodlums, saboteurs and enemy agents in equal measure. Tim, similarly empowered, became his sidekick!
Lots of Nazi and Japanese war covers. Ken Battefield may have drawn some of the later stories in this collection.
Boy, I know a lot of old time collectors who have wanted this volume for decades. There was even a Black Terror fan club at one time. Even though his illustrators are not well known, his costume is unforgettable and his WWII-era covers are some of the most highly collected of the Golden Age. I'm hoping PS does all his Startling appearances and the entire run of his own title, they are great. Later on Alex Schomberg does a bunch of great covers for both titles. - Bud
