Description

Traces the life of one of the most successful painters of the Victorian era, and shows examples of his historical paintings, most of which featured classical settings. The paintings of Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema (1836-1912) reveal more about 19th century taste than those of any other artist of the era. His elaborate reconstructions of ancient Rome depicting elegant women and his eroticism were adored by the Victorians. This book contains some of Alma-Tadema's most beautiful paintings and surveys his career and personality. His stylistic changes are investigated as is his work in other media, such as his theatrical and costume designs and his work in architecture and Hollywood film sets. Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema OM, RA, RWS was a Dutch painter who later settled in the United Kingdom, becoming the last officially recognised denizen in 1873. Born in Dronryp, the Netherlands, and trained at the Royal Academy of Antwerp, Belgium, he settled in London, England in 1870 and spent the rest of his life there. Out Of Print. Condition: Very Fine/As New. In Shrink Wrap.
