SECRET AGENT X-9

Reprints Secret Agent X-9 from 1934. Dozens of comic strip thrillers were in print by 1930, but in January 1934, the introduction of the King Features adventure, Secret Agent X-9, proved to be the gala wedding of pulp fiction to the comics medium. Danger and pain was X-9's lot. He ran the gauntlet daily beginning in 1934, which was a landmark collaboration between the leading detective fiction writer of all time, Dashiell Hammett, with astounding art by Alex Raymond.

Raymond's artistry helped make 1934 a year remembered as among the best in the history of American comics. Milton Caniff's masterpiece, "Terry and the Pirates," debuted in October '34; Lil' Al Capp's Abner, a biting mix of satire and hillbilly adventure, came out two months early; other stories that remained, like "Mandrake the Magician," launched earlier in the year. But Alex Raymond leads the parade with his illustrations, including "Flash Gordon" and "Jungle Jim", which skyrocketed in the Sunday newspapers. Out of Print. Condition: Very Fine Minus.
