Presenting the long-delayed first volumes of PS Artbooks’ 8-volume series. It was nearly impossible to find the source issues. Softee format in a handsome hardcover slipcase. Volume #3-8 were previously published in hardcover. With illustrated introductions by Frankenstein expert Don Glut and Dick Briefer himself. Genre goes from serious horror, to comic adventures, and back to horror again over the eight years as a back-up strip in Prize Comics. Frankenstein was a regular feature in Prize Comics. He eventually went on to his own title, which began in parallel with his stories in Prize. Dick Briefer wrote and drew all the stories. Frankenstein began in the back pages of Prize as a lumbering, ugly but essentially good-hearted monster, with slapstick friends and stories. Once the horror boom hit, Briefer adapted his monster to a far more serious one, akin to The Heap. He meted out violent, homicidal justice to those deserving. I actually prefer these dark stories, but the earlier humor work also has its own charm. Briefer obviously put his all into this, the longest running feature of his career.
