The First Fifty Years was Published in 1979, on the fiftieth anniversary of Popeye's first appearance. It showcases art and inside information about comics character, Popeye, along with the rest of the Thimble Theater cast and the strip's history. Sagendorf's book details the experience of working with Popeye comics as their main artist for a period of several decades, and also as an assistant to original creator E. C. Segar in the early years of the strip. Several comic art samples are included as well.

In addition, this 50th celebration contains photographs and pieces of artwork created exclusively by Sagendorf for the book. There are four-color illustrations throughout and reveals Olive Oyl's statistics (19-19-19), Wimpy's first name (J. Wellington), and Swee'pea's suspicious parentage.
