Play and Passion in Russian Fine Art. People have always played games, experiencing the agony of defeat and the joy of victory. However, the ethics and aesthetics of the eighteenth century Enlightenment forbade artists from depicting low or ignoble deeds and passions. Since then, Russian artists have played with excitement and passion in all forms of art, from sculpture and painting to films and performances. Paintings, drawings, watercolors, engravings and works of arts and crafts dedicated to human passions, including games, are usually lost in the overall picture of the artist's creative heritage. Unlike literature, in which special research works are often devoted to the theme of the game, never before in the history of Russian fine art have motives been the subject of study and special attention. The exhibition and the accompanying album were the first attempt to bring together all the disparate material from different eras and types of art.
