MODERN COMICS Volume 1

With the war coming to an end, Military was retitled Modern. Blackhawk, Death Patrol, Pvt. Dogtag and PT Boat strips continued. Pin-up girl Cho Who came on board, and soon, in #53, Bill Ward's infamous sexpot Torchy began her run here. Blackhawk and the team continue their daring escapades in land, sea and air, here still battling the Japanese. Modern carried on to issue #102 in 1950, while Blackhawk headlined here and also in his own title, which continued uninterrupted right into the Silver Age. DC Comics took over Blackhawk Comics with issue #108 in 1956 when Quality folded up shop...and it ran all the way to #273 in 1984. Enthusiasts like Jim Steranko and Howard Chaykin did much to keep the history of this fine strip alive and well; Chaykin's revival of the character was a return to the kind of stories here.
