LITTLE ORPHAN ANNIE, Nemo Bookshelf Volumes 1 2 & 3

Nemo Bookshelf Volumes 1, 2 &3 (1931-1933): This is a great reproduction of the newspaper comic strip, featuring an entire year of strips in each volume, including both dailies and Sundays. This Fantagraphics series is the only reprinting to include the Little Orphan Annie Sunday strips (Arf!, Cupples and Leon, Dover, and IDW only reprints dailies). The art and stories continue to be enjoyable. Little Orphan Annie was a daily American comic strip created by Harold Gray and syndicated by Tribune Media Services. The strip took its name from the 1885 poem "Little Orphan Annie" by James Whitcomb Riley and made its debut on August 5, 1924, in the New York Daily News. The plot follows the wide-ranging adventures of Annie, her dog Sandy, and her benefactor Oliver "Daddy" Warbucks.

When Franklin D. Roosevelt assumed the presidency on March 4, 1933, shortly after the comic strips in this collection began, a clash emerged between Gray's conservative beliefs and FDR's New Deal approach. Interestingly, Little Orphan Annie soared in popularity during the 1930s, a decade that represented FDR's vision of a government with a social conscience, which directly contradicted Gray's ideology. While Roosevelt inspired the struggling populace to seek government support, Gray advocated for self-reliance through hard work and adherence to free enterprise principles. This juxtaposition of messages highlights both a political divide and the complexities of the narrative at play.
