This book is Keith Ward's approach to impressionistic painting. Ward is noted primarily for his impressionistic "easel" paintings of landscapes and portraits, but worked as an Illustrator for over 50 years. He studied painting with Spencer Mackey at the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco, Chicago Art Institute, the National Academy in Chicago, and the Grand Central School of Art in New York under Harvey Dunn. He has taught hundreds of students in workshops throughout the west for twenty years.

He taught how to paint in a number of different styles and subjects and believed illustration is a good background for a fine artist. If you learned to read "Dick and Jane," thrilled to the magnificent horse illustrations in The Black Stallion, or know Elmer, the trademark on Elmer's Glue, then you know Keith Ward's work. Ward, presently a renowned impressionist, was the gifted illustrator who painted those enduring images on the American consciousness. Like Norman Rockwell, Keith Ward is part of our "Americana," illustrating for so many magazines and advertisements, such as Life, Outdoor Life, Phillips 66, Borden Dairy Co., U.S. Steel (and many others), Ward's subject matter has a large range, from portraits, to landscapes and seascapes, to still life, to western motifs.
