KARMEN

Spanish writer and artist Guillem March is best known for his ongoing, extensive work with DC Comics on Batman, Catwoman, and Harley Quinn. Here, he takes up his pen for an edgy new volume about a highly unconventional angel named Karmen and the beautiful young but mixed up girl -- who has cut her wrists. Together they go off to explore life, our protagonist now nude but totally invisible to anyone...and able to fly and go through objects, very much on another plane. Together they explore the city, her friends, everything that brought her to this place of desperation. "Packed with surprises and metaphysics, this gorgeously drawn series deploys tenderness and humor as it dives deep into topics that matter." Quite a bit of attractive nudity. I sat down with this and could not put it down until I was finished...and it's not short! It's a wild ride, unlike anything I’ve read in comics before. I really, really liked it. Not just our cute young protagonist, although her nudity is a treat. But her “ghostly” wanderings (she swims through the air, weightless), listens to conversations, tries but fails to talk to anyone. Life after death? March is a superb artist already, and now he tells a powerful story. I learn to really care for this unhappy young lady and her unfulfilling life...so far. The reader explores her world (Paris, or a city in Spain perhaps) and the life choices to brought her to the dark place. The story takes some wild turns. But ultimately I really cared about where it goes and how it all beautifully wraps up. Totally satisfying.
