JERRY ROBINSON: Ambassador of Comics

This fully illustrated collection was written in collaboration with the artist himself. It is packed with Golden Age and Silver Age artwork and insights. Filled with extremely rare original artwork (Jerry Robinson saved much of his best Golden Age work, particularly for Batman, which appears here) along with lots of special material never before collected. As an extra bonus, the book cover, underneath the dust jacket, is painterly and amazing! Jerry was a frequent curator and consultant (including to DC Comics in the 2000s). In 2004 he produced the first in-depth exhibition of the genre, The Superhero: The Golden Age of Comic Books 1939-1950 at the Breman Museum, Atlanta (which was excellent: I saw it - Bud). In 2006, Robinson curated the exhibition, The Superhero: Good and Evil in American Comics, at the Jewish Museum in New York. Robinson also branched out into fine arts, commercial illustration and academia. Among 30 other books, he wrote one of the earliest ABOUT comics: The Comics: An Illustrated History of Comic Strip Art, 1974, revised in 2011 by Jerry and published by Dark Horse. Jerry Robinson, much like Will Eisner, was an early innovator and one of the best creators in the Golden Age. His work with Mort Meskin on The Black Terror (shown here) took a badly drawn hero to entirely new creative heights in the late 1940s. His stories for Stan Lee's Atlas (Marvel) comics, from war to crime, were among the best to appear there...he certainly had all the skills necessary, from panel innovation to storytelling, to have been an EC Comics mainstay -- if things had worked out differently. Robinson was an original member of the Batman team; his creations include the Joker and Robin (with writer Bill Finger), and some of the most creative covers and story artwork of the 1940s. His other creations include London (Boy Comics), Jet Scott and Atoman, one of the first "atomic" superheroes. Jerry passed away in 2011. Out of Print. Condition: Very Fine/As New.
