This issue leads off with a fascinating article on Denis McLoughlin. I'd not heard of him before but now I'm a big fan. Denis was responsible for a long career of wonderful art. He is well-known in England in the comics arena for his superb western themed covers and stories for British comics annuals, particular the Buffalo Bill Annual, beginning in 1950. But he is as big or bigger in the world of vintage paperback covers. His "Boardman Bloodhound" titles, almost 300 of them starting in 1947, are a perfect counterpart to the powerful artwork on, in the U.S., Dell "Mapbacks" and Popular Library covers. Denis was a master of hard-boiled themes, but also created absolutely amazing cheesecake.
But there's much more: an interview with comics legend Ian Kennedy. His superb World War II aviation work (including covers and stories for Commando) is unparalleled; his science fiction work for Starblazer is top notch. His career started in western annuals in the 1950s and continues into the 1990s.
And then there is "Sensuous Sensibility: The Fin de Siècle Erotica of Cheri Herouard." I've collected this artist's work for many years and this is the first time I've seen coverage on his career. His covers of La Vie Parisienne feature some of the finest good-girl art of post-WWI, and he wasn't reluctant to do wonderful nudes, as also covered here.
