IBIS THE INVINCIBLE Volume 2

This second volume of Ibis the Invincible from the great Fawcett Comics is packed full of stories of Fawcett's man of magic --but much more like DC's Starman though not in costume. This volume includes: Ibis the Invincible #4-6, 1946-48; Whiz Comics #2: "Ibis Lives Again," 1940; All Hero Comics #1, introducing "Banshee O'Brien, Boy Enchanter,"  in the "Mystery of the Modern Monster," 1943; Danger & Adventure #22: "The Viking Horde," 1955; Whiz Comics: Wheaties Miniature Edition "Ibis and the Devil Dolls," 1947. Basil Wolverton's Mystic Moot and his Magic Snoot stories appear in all three issues of Ibis as a cool bonus. Kurt Schaffenberger and Pete Costanza, working together, also draw a story in #5. And the cover of #6 is all Schaffenberger, who's far better known for his work in the Silver Age on Superman and Superman's Girlfriend, Lois Lane! The well known author Joseph Millard also cuts his teeth here with of all things, a text story. Millard joins other authors including Mickey Spillane and Alfred Bester, who got their early career starts in the pages of Golden Age comics. Gus Ricca drawns a good number of these early stories. Virtually unknown today, he was a very competent artist and a cut above so much of the Jack Binder shop work that appeared in Fawcett titles. Ricca went on to do some of the most collectible and strange key comic covers of the pre-code era for Scoop, Punch and Dynamic. He was the art director for publisher Chesler, who did these titles, and Gus had a long career in magazine and newspaper illustration; his work was last seen in these aformentioned early 50s horror titles. Ibis lasted just 6 issues of his own, but as you can see he went on to more appearances in various Fawcett titles. The reason we find him in Danger & Adventure is that when Fawcett sold out their line to Charlton Comics, this was an unpublished story that finally saw print.
