Created by Dick Ayers and Ray Krank, Rex Fury was originally known as the Calico Kid, who together with his white horse Spectre became the Ghost Rider! Wearing a white outfit covered with phosphorus, he could cover parts of his body to give the illusion that he was merely a floating head or pair of hands! To further the illusion, he wielded a black lariat and black bullwhip! A wildly popular title in the 1950s, which Marvel scooped up and turned into their own motorcyle-riding hero. The Ghost Rider battled many foes, who like him, were not truly supernatural at all, such as an imposter of Frankenstein's Monster and the Harpy, werewolves and vampires! Dick Ayers has said that this was one of his favorite periods in his career. His Ghost Rider not only ran in his own title for 14 issues, from 1950 to 1954, he also appeared as a back-up story in A-1 Comics, Best of the West, Black Phantom, Bobby Benson and his B-Bar-B Riders, Great Western, Red Mask, and Tim Holt!!! Published by ME, Magazine Enterprises, same publisher as Thunda, Cave Girl, Funnyman, Manhunt, Robin Hood, Jet Powers and a number of other fine titles in the late 1940s and early 1950s.
