A Library Congress 1995 Exhibition -Featuring the "Funnies: 100 Years of the Comic Strip," an exhibition of approximately 90 original drawings and published comic strips, opened in the Madison foyer on May 5, 1995. 100 years to the day after the publication of the first color "Hogan's Alley" newspaper comic created for the New York World. The strip featured the now legendary "Yellow Kid," a buck-toothed, flap-eared street urchin in a yellow smock who is widely acknowledged as the first cartoon character to acquire celebrity. Cartoon panel was created on the opening day of the Featuring the Funnies exhibition, May 5, 1995, the centennial celebration of the American comic strip. Includes drawings of Beetle Bailey by Mort Walker, Brenda Starr by Dale Messick, the Joker by Jerry Robinson, Dick Tracy by Dick Locher, Grimmy by Mike Peters, Shoe by Jeff MacNelly, Barney Google and Snuffy Smith by Fred Lasswell, Hi and Lois by Brian Walker and Sid and Ernie by Bo Grace. Much thought (and a few chuckles) had gone into the Library's exhibition, which is both a chronological survey and a thematic analysis of the relationship of the cartoons to contemporary events, politics and trends in society and popular culture.
