Third of five exclusive volumes, authorized by the ERB estate, collecting the entire run by one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. Hogarth's anatomy, foliage, detail, and story-telling raised the level of the Tarzan mythology to a new level. Here Tarzan is a demi-god, fearless, powerful, fast-thinking, a hero armed only with a knife and bow and arrow. Three long episodes: Tarzan and N'Ani, Tarzan on the Island of Mua-Ao, and Tarzan and the Ononoes. New intro by noted Tarzan artist Joe Jusko, with original artwork from two Sunday pages. These stories include the wild sequences with the Ononoes--literally, giant heads with arms but no legs, who are immensely strong and overpower Tarzan (see our scan). This is many a fan's favorite sequence from this era. Somehow Hogarth's coloring is also even better here, or perhaps it's the reproduction we see...but it's glorious, as you can see from our first scan and others. I have always preferred Hogarth's Ape-Man to Foster's. Hogarth came into his own as he moved away from Foster's more traditional style. Action was non-stop, and every panel was filled with explosive, dynamic artwork, beautiful women, strong and powerful warriors, strange creatures, and every challenge imaginable for Tarzan to overcome. Hogarth went on become one of the most famous art teachers of his day. His books, such as Dynamic Anatomy and others, reveal how he created the Tarzan pages, and they remain in print to this day. He returned to Tarzan to create two stand-alone graphic novels based on ERB’s original stories, both currently available from us.
