Description

Maggie and Jiggs are back in "Of Cabbages and Kings," an extravaganza that contains dailies and Sundays from 1937 and 1938. The combustible-yet-inseparable couple make the long (in those days) journey to London, England for the King's coronation. Upon their return, Jiggs decides the only way he'll convince Maggie to move back to the old neighborhood is to lose his fortune. He makes the one outlandish investment after another but each time he only becomes richer. Until he hits on the right formula. For Maggie, the unthinkable happens: it's back to eating boiled cabbage when the wealthy Jiggs goes broke! Laughs for all ages, this classic strip was widely read most newspapers ran it on page ONE of the Sunday Comics section--making it comparable to Peanuts in popularity! Art Deco style artwork is a joy to behold, particularly on the Sunday pages, which have been beautifully restored. Since this strip began in 1919 and ran for an amazing 87 years, these collections are not attempting to collect the complete series. Instead, they are focusing on the very best sequences. Volume 1, which is still available, collects strips from 1939 and 1940. This new volume precedes it, collecting strips from 1937 and 1938. Bruce Canwell provides another delightful illustrated introduction which includes rare McManus Christmas cards, photos, contemporary advertising, specialty cartoons and drawings, etc. Out of Print. Condition: Near Fine. Slight jacket bump. Light scratch along the spine edge.
