BRINGING UP FATHER A Complete Compilation 1913-1914

The Hyperion Library of Classic American Comic Strips: Bringing Up Father A Complete Compilation 1913-1914. George McManus went through several stages of experimentation before he finally settled on Bringing Up Father as a regular daily feature. The first Father strip, which made its debut on January 2, 1913, ran alternately with other McManus strips of the period-most of them also based on the domestic theme, and featuring husbands and wives living together in not so happy harmony. The strips shown on pages 3 to 77, which include the earliest Bringing Up Father episodes, appear in the same chronological order in which they were originally published. They constitute a remarkable graphic record of a creative talent at work, in search of the theme and the characters that would ultimately become his magnum opus. The Maggie and Jiggs of these early strips are hardly look-alikes of the later, more familiar McManus characters. Jiggs, for example, sports a goatee and Maggie is considerably heavier. Note, too, that many of the husbands in the other strips also resemble Jiggs, particularly Bill in Ah! Yes! That Happy Home, who is almost a dead ringer for the later Jiggs. Out Of Print. Condition.
