AYA tells the story of a studious and clear-sighted young woman, her easy-going friends Adjoua and Bintou, and their meddling relatives and neighbors in the golden time of the Ivory Coast in 1978. It's a breezy and wryly funny account of the desire for joy and freedom, and of the simple pleasures and private troubles of everyday life in Yop City. An unpretentious and gently humorous story of an Africa we rarely see-spirited, hopeful and resilient.

This is an irresistible comedy, a couple of love stories and a tale about becoming African. This isn't a guided tour for backseat travelers; as you read, you're a Yapougon local. It's also a book about what goes on in the minds of teenage girls. Marguerite Abouet and Clément Quorere bring back to life an Africa that's not asking for favors and that can stand on its own feet.
