Watercolor emerged as a significant medium in American art throughout the nineteenth century, captivating many of the nation's foremost artists with its clarity, spontaneity, and ease of application. One of the pioneering figures in this field was British artist William Guy Wall, who arrived in the U.S. in 1817 and, alongside contemporaries like John William Hill and William Trost Richards, founded the New York Water Color Society, which hosted the first major exhibition of watercolors in America in 1853. Notable American watercolorists include Winslow Homer, John Singer Sargent, John Marin, Edward Hopper, Charles Demuth, Thomas Eakins, Maurice Prendergast, Maxfield Parrish, and Andrew Wyeth.
