Will Eisner chronicles not only the Great Depression but examines the lives and dreams, hopes and fears of characters enduring and surviving in the 1030's. Then also the rise of Nazism and the spread of socialist politics through the depiction of the protagonist, Jacob Shtarkah, whose existential search reflected Eisner’s own lifelong struggle. A Life Force is the second graphic novel in the Contract With God Trilogy. It was first serialized in Will Eisner’s Quarterly starting in 1984. It's said to be an autobiographical and journalistic. Sometimes harsh, sometimes uplifting. Mature, and in places, unflinching. Eisner described his narrative, an “exercise in his  personal agony,” a way of dealing with the death of his daughter Alice (from Leukemia) years earlier.
