He was born in Toulouse, France in 1882 and was educated as a lawyer, although he rebelled and later studied art at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. He is best known as one of the giants of the ‘Golden Age of Illustration’ along with Arthur Rackham and Kay Nielsen. His beautiful watercolor book illustrations are still in print today, and the original first editions are scarce and highly valued.\n\n\u003cstrong\u003eOut of Print. Condition: Very Fine. \u003c\/strong\u003e\n\n\u003cem\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eREVIEW by Albert Seligman\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/em\u003e\n\nMy own involvement with \u003cem\u003eThe American Weekly\u003c\/em\u003e covers was through a\nfortunate meeting with \u003cstrong\u003eAnn C. Hughey\u003c\/strong\u003e, who published the complete Dulac\nbibliography (of his books) in 1995. At the time, I was an avid\ncollector of Golden Age illustrators, and Dulac was my specialty. Ann\nwrote the \u003cem\u003eAmerican Weekly\u003c\/em\u003e checklist for \u003cstrong\u003eColin White’s\u003c\/strong\u003e Dulac biography\nwith all thirteen series and each issue by title and date. I was able to\ncontact her through an East Coast book dealer, and she invited me to\nspend the weekend and see her collection. When I asked her to show me\nthe \u003cem\u003eAmerican Weekly\u003c\/em\u003e covers, she replied that no one has ever republished\nthem since they first appeared. We thought it would be a worthwhile\nproject to find and publish all the covers in one volume, for the\nbenefit of fellow Dulac collectors and dealers.\n\nOf course, we didn’t know where to find the original covers, as most of\nthe newspapers from the 20’s through the 50’s were long gone. I was\nliving in San Francisco, and much of my book collection was provided by\n\u003cstrong\u003eBud Plant\u003c\/strong\u003e and \u003cstrong\u003eJim Vadeboncoeur\u003c\/strong\u003e, who were partners in the \u003cem\u003eIncredible\u003c\/em\u003e\n\u003cem\u003eCatalog\u003c\/em\u003e, which Bud is still publishing today. Jim was planning to\npublish glossy magazines (Images) with Golden Age artists and had a\nsmall collection of \u003cem\u003eAmerican Weekly\u003c\/em\u003e covers. (He wrote the \u003cem\u003eAmerican\u003c\/em\u003e\n\u003cem\u003eWeekly\u003c\/em\u003e article for Wikipedia). Jim recommended I call \u003cstrong\u003eBill Blackbeard\u003c\/strong\u003e,\nwho owned and operated The San Francisco Academy of Comic Art. Bill had\nthe largest collection of comic art in the whole country, although I\ndidn’t realize it at the time. He had all the Dulac \u003cem\u003eAmerican Weeklies\u003c\/em\u003e\nlying flat in his garage. Bill allowed us to remove the covers and have\nthem professionally photographed. After Bill passed on in 2011, his\nentire seven-ton collection was removed to the Billy Ireland Cartoon\nLibrary and Museum at the Ohio State University.\n\nThe photographers provided us with transparencies used to make the\nprinting plates back in the days before digital photography. We\ncontacted many publishers, but no one was interested in such a large\nfull-color production. Reluctantly, we shelved the project, and Ann\npublished her Dulac Bibliography in 1995.\n\nThanks to the digital photography revolution, I was able to restore the\nillustrations and publish this edition, as well as \u003cem\u003eThe American Weekly\u003c\/em\u003e\n\u003cem\u003eCovers of Edmund Dulac 1924-1951 100th Anniversary Edition\u003c\/em\u003e in 2024. That\nedition replicates the full magazine front cover. For the complete\ncollection, only the first cover of each series is presented, to show\nhow the covers changed over the different series. All the illustrations\nare cropped and restored, with the original newspaper captions.
