Wyeth\u003c\/strong\u003e, and other luminaries.\n\nThe publishing boom of the early twentieth century led to an entirely new vocation, that of art direction for editorial publications and advertising. In 1921, the recently formed Art Directors Club resolved to show that their profession involved more than just signage for selling products. Their exhibition of paintings and drawings, intended to prove their work worthy of artistic consideration, was judged by a jury that featured some of the era's most distinguished names in illustration and art, including Ashcan School painter Robert Henri; Charles Dana Gibson, creator of the \"Gibson Girl\"; and outstanding New York artist Joseph Pennell, among others.\n\nStudents of art, illustration, and advertising as well as professional illustrators, historians, and anyone with an appreciation of advertising art will find this volume a richly evocative source of historic commercial art.\n\nFounded in 1920, the Art Directors Club consisted originally of creatives from advertising and publishing who were \"ambitious for the progress of art in advertising and industry.\" Early members included notable illustrators of the day who had established long-term working relationships with publishers. The club published annuals for several decades, and many collectors such as myself have accumulated as many as we could find.\n\nIt's a fascinating snapshot of a long-lost time, in a world of print advertising, before radio and television. Artists were feted like movie stars, and every week you could find their work in the leading magazines, in brochures, trade journals, even on billboards.\n\nMost of the artists have several items included, up to five or six.
