He was already working in the late nineteen-teens and by the mid to late 1920s he had become an important and popular book illustrator.\n\nBlaine was perfect for the racier titles, painting delightfully naked ladies and exotic scenes from the mysterious East. Titles include Kama Sutra, Hashish and Incense, Justine, Venus in Chains, Sindbad the Sailor, and the highly acclaimed \u003cem\u003eThe Sorcerer's Apprentice\u003c\/em\u003e (1927), \u003cem\u003eSalammbo\u003c\/em\u003e (1927), \u003cem\u003eVathek\u003c\/em\u003e (1928), and \u003cem\u003eAlraune\u003c\/em\u003e (1929). He even illustrated the very first edition of \u003cem\u003eSteinbeck's Cup of Gold\u003c\/em\u003e.\n\nBlaine has been the subject of other books, all of which are now out of print. This, however, is the first to closely examine -- and profusely illustrate -- his entire range of work. Every book and portfolio is shown here, and also an abundance of previously unpublished works.
