Superlative artwork by Joe Kubert and Murphy Anderson, who obviously really cared deeply for the characters. As did writer Gardner Fox, who was writing the Golden Age Hawkman stories and returned to do this modern retake of the characters. This begins with their journey as Thanagarian warriors coming to protect Earth. Whether battling the Shadow Thief, thwarting alien invasions, or solving ancient puzzles, their stories are a masterclass in courage and ingenuity, and brilliant comics storytelling and art.

This volume also includes landmark appearances like Zatanna’s first story, epic battles with flying gorillas, and team-ups with the Atom and other DC heroes. With its mix of action, intrigue, and sci-fi fantasy, Wings Across Time is an essential volume for any fan of the winged wonders.

I'm not quite sure how I was so lucky. But in 1960, when I was 8 years old, I actually bought the first new appearance of Hawkman & Hawkgirl in The Brave and the Bold #34, a ten-cent comic book right off the newsstands, along with several other DC and Marvel titles. This was an amazing time for comics -- The Justice Society had just been premiered in Brave and the Bold #28-30; DC's sister try-out title, Showcase, was featuring newly revived heroes like The Flash, Green Lantern and Aquaman, as well as new heroes like Adam Strange and Rip Hunter. DC didn't think Hawkman was quite ready for his own title after two tryout runs in Brave and the Bold, so they made him a back-up feature in the highly popular Mystery in Space starring Adam Strange. And they even teamed up, for the story here, over two issues of adventures on Adam's distant planet Rann. Top editor Julius Schwartz had his premiere team of writers and artists working on Hawkman, making these true classics of the Silver Age. - Bud

Collects The Brave and the Bold #34-36, 42-44; Mystery in Space #87-90; The Atom #7; Hawkman #1-11, 1961-66.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0999/0684/7006/files/dcfhwa-dc-finest-hawkman-wings-across-time-book.jpg?v=1784519697
