We also get early horror comics, Nazi covers and Remember Pearl Harbor as they came out just as the U.S. entered WWII. As a child, Bart Hill was witness to his parents' brutal murder. The murderer also branded Bart with a hot iron, leaving a boomerang-shaped scar on the left side of his chest. This traumatic experience left the boy mute. He trained his entire life in the art of the boomerang, eventually becoming a master boomerang marksman. He then donned a costume and took to the streets as the vigilante crime-fighter known as Daredevil. From the creators of Crime Does Not Pay, the company's greatest superhero, who lasted into the 1950s. These early stories are classics with one of the best costumes of any Golden Age hero.

Pus bondage and torture stories, Japanese menace, and a Quasimodo cover. All this before the Little Wise Guys joined DD in #13 -- this more serious early period is considered the very best of Daredevil. The same creators that made Crime Does Not Pay, Crime and Punishment and Silver Streak top-selling comics of the time, were putting all their best efforts into Daredevil (who in fact began in the pages of Silver Streak, as collected in this series Vol 1). Daredevil also became one of the best selling comics of the 40s, spurred on by Ciro's human interest stories that offered WAY more than 90% of the other comic book adventures, more like novellas than comic stories.

However... It appears Captain Cook lied, for Bart Hill/Daredevil's second appearance showed him able to speak and it was later revealed that his parents were killed while in Australia, with Bart then raised by a tribe of aborigines who taught him the art of using boomerangs. As an adult, he returned to the U.S. and fought crime as Daredevil. Lev Gleason launched Daredevil's own comic with Daredevil Battles Hitler #1 (July 1941), in which Daredevil and other Silver Streak heroes fought the German chancellor. It was written and partially drawn by Charles Biro, who in his 16-year run would make the character one of the most acclaimed of the Golden Age.
