Murray captures ERB's style and voice very well. John Carter finally comes into play...in a major way...but not until halfway through the novel! I could elaborate, but no more spoilers. For the first half of the book, Tarzan 1) manages to stay alive, not easy, 2) explores the outer reaches of Mars, far from civilization, and 3) begins to meet the many denizens of Mars: White Apes, a Zitidar, Thoats (which he masters riding), and Green Martians.\n\nBut using his head and the amazing strength and the leaping ability of an earthman on Mars--just as John Carter found--Tarzan is making friends, making new weapons (he lost everything, even his father's knife, when he was teleported), gaining friends and followers, and learning how to survive in a very, very hostile world that has clearly seen better days. Every new challenge showcases the Jungle Lord’s astounding strength (made even more powerful because of the Martian atmosphere), indomitable will and superior cunning, in ways that are imaginative and visually inspiring. In 1901, he arrives in the wild, untamed port of Surabaya, Java to sell a few machine guns and relax. But then he runs into the loveliest woman he's ever seen. She's in a cage and for sale. Unable to restrain himself, he tries to rescue her -- it's the first of many failed attempts: This woman is more than able to help herself.\n\nIn the thick of World War I, he meets her again in Paris. Now she's call Mata Hari -- the most famous exotic dancer and courtesan in France. But she's suspected of being a German spy, in trouble again. This time Charteris does help her.
