In these stories, Wonder Woman travels from Paradise Island to Man’s World, where she battles both common criminals and supervillains like Cheetah and her first nemesis, the Baroness Von Gunther. We were there to do sketch art on demand and probably paid some small fee for the day’s work. None of us had much of any professional experience and almost no published work...

“The work entailed drawing quick sketches for the mostly young fans who enthusiastically lined up at our tables. Rick and Steve Bissette rose to the challenge fairly easily as I recall, but not most of us. My art is usually drawn rather slowly, carefully penciled, erased and re-penciled until it’s ready, then carefully inked. As I was going through this usual process at the shopping mall I noticed the line in front of my table was growing longer and longer, with the first sketch still unfinished...

“The drawings in this book start about 17 years after that all day sketching event...By this time I was getting paid for each drawing and spending 30 to 90 minutes creating one. These are carefully penciled and inked, but quickly and with an economy not always present in my regular published work, and some are of course more successful than others. A few years ago I was reflecting on how I was able to do these, and realized the debt I owed to Bernie Wrightson. Bernie’s art was a big influence and inspiration to me throughout the seventies, my formative years, and this influence led to my being hired to re-boot his Swamp Thing series at DC in 1982, launching my career.”

Walt Kelly's Peter Wheat comics are renowned for their humor and artistic flair, appealing to both children and adults, as well as their incredible scarcity. The stories were fairy tales starring Peter Wheat, an elf-sized boy who lived in a hollow tree on the edge of a wheat field where he and the Little Folk battled Dragonel, Queen of the Hornets.

While created with kids in mind the mythology spun in these stories is timeless. “Coupled with Kelly's incredible artwork, this series of stories, which run in arcs, are indispensable in Walt Kelly's canon of work,” commented Dr. Thomas Andrae, editor of this series. The Peter Wheat production history was written by Walt Kelly biographer Steve Thompson for this volume.

Kelly loved doing fairy tales, and his first comics work was about tiny Lilliputians in New Comics in 1935. His work for Dell's fabulous Fairy Tale Parade is a high point of both his creativity and the world of Golden Age comics. He also further honed his skills working for the Disney studios on Snow White, Pinocchio, The Reluctant Dragon and Dumbo.

Just as his work for Dell was diminishing and Pogo was taking off as a comic strip, he was hired to develop a new series for Baker's Associates to promote Peter Wheat Bread and other baked goods. These 16-page stories were constructed as serials, taking place in a lush forest filled with Rackham-esque trees, and peopled by animals and insects who all talked with Peter. Peter becomes the savior of the "little folk". Their enemies were hornet knights, ruled by the nefarious Grand Wizard and his beautiful daughter Dragonel, who eventually is won over to Peter's side and becomes his close companion. (Culled from Thomas Andrae’s excellent introduction.) A second feature talks about Peter as Advertising as Art, with examples of the rare Peter Wheat circus, punch out characters and cool advertising pieces.

"The weird thing about Peter What is that he was awesome. He was a toddler the size of a louse...but his adventures were swordclashing killing sprees. He wasn't prancing through meadows and singing about the pep you get from enriched wheat flour. He was punching birds in the face and driving axes into hamsters. There was no whimsy in his fighting style -- he was all business...he was the most powerful 2-inch creature on the planet." -Stephen Thompson

The original comics were giveaways and today are extremely scarce, which is one reason why it's taken seven years to put together volume 2.

Note: A hardcover edition of this was announced for publication in 2020 but was never published. We like this book at lot. A collection of the best stories from the classic Fawcett Comics run of Don Winslow of the Navy, beginning with the first issue in 1943. A long, well illustrated introduction details his appearances first as a newspaper comic strip (1934-55), then in films beginning in 1942, books, pulps, and other media. Here you'll find Winslow fighting the Axis powers as well as villains like The Snake and the smoldering hot, but deadly lady pirate, Singapore Sal. Winslow was a spy-chasing lieutenant commander in Naval Intelligence.

The comic strip led to a radio show that began in 1937. The character served to foster recruitment, entertain Navy personnel and the general public up to and throughout World War II and beyond and was popular into the 1950s.

The comic strip debuted on March 5, 1934. A Sunday page was added in 1935. Creator Lieutenant Commander Frank V. Martinek, USNR, who served in Navy Intelligence himself, supervised the daily feature’s "general tone and direction", sending the typewritten continuity to Naval Lieutenant Leon Beroth, who served as art director and Carl Hammond to handle layouts and research. From 1934 to 1952, Beroth was the leading artist on the feature. Ken Ernst (later famous for Mary Worth), assisted or ghosted the art between 1940 and 1942.

With Don Winslow leaving his fiancée behind in December 1941 to go fight the Japanese, the World War II period saw the height of Don Winslow's popularity.

Although never an A-list title, this was a solid series. Of course, Fawcett was also home to the Captain Marvel family, Spy Smasher, Bulletman, etc. and they knew how to write a good story, with writers like Otto Binder, William Woolfolk and C.C. Beck. These stories were more down to earth, with Winslow manning both ships and planes on adventures that pitted him against the Japanese, Nazis, and after the war, pirates, smugglers and the like.

"As a piece of comic book history, this is remarkable...blended somewhat realistic adventure fiction with outrageous pulp...lots of fistfights...a sexy female pirate...and a couple of really weird male villains that Dick Tracy would have loved." -ICv2

This may not make it into your typical bookstore and comic outlets. While it looks just like an archive by IDW or Dark Horse, it's actually funded and published by the U.S. Naval Institute! I personally collect Don Winslow comics as well as his Big Little Books. His two pulp appearances are extremely scarce. Craig Yoe's introduction is very well done, a good overview of all the history, from first idea to comic strip, including the uncredited writers and artists there, and with good illustrations of the pulps, serial posters, and even an unpublished cover that we show here in black and white. From a start in 1947 at the Simon & Kirby shop, John Severin co-created the legendary Western strip American Eagle, and became an EC Comics mainstay, working with Harvey Kurtzman on MAD and Two-Fisted Tales. In addition to a 40+ year association with Cracked magazine, his pivotal Marvel Comics work included an extended run on The Hulk, and teaming with sister Marie Severin to create the definitive comics version of King Kull.

Throughout a storied career, he freelanced for virtually every major publisher, and remained a workhorse up until his final Dark Horse mini-series at age 89. And his work never suffered; unlike some artists who rested on their laurels and didn't keep up the quality, Severin's work was outstanding from his earliest to his final stories.

Included in this volume is a special "American Eagle" section (which enjoyed an extended run in Prize Comics Western, a rare pro-Native American strip) which includes TWO complete stories. Plus an eye-popping art gallery, personal Christmas & holiday cards John created, and extensive personal photos and artifacts (including WWII "Victory Mail" cartoons and handmade greeting cards for his family).

Also featured is commentary from over 25 peers gathered just for this book, including Neal Adams, Richard Corben, John Byrne, Russ Heath, Walter Simonson, and many others. Written by Greg Biga and multiple Eisner Award-winner Jon B. Cooke (editor of Comic Book Creator).

Introduction by Howard Chaykin, foreword by Mort Todd, and afterword by Chuck Dixon, this profusely illustrated book celebrates the centennial of the two-fisted artist's birth!

Personal Note: I'm a huge fan of Severin; I have loved his work since his earliest Marvel comics and EC. I own the original to a full page tribute on page 146, drawn by Marie Severin, celebrating all of John's many characters. We ran it as the cover for our Fall 2021 catalog when we first announced this. The long delay was because the publisher was not happy with the first printing, so it was rejected and this went back to press--that and the supply chain issues account for the wait. But it was well, well worth it.

For our very special bookplate, editor Jon Cooke came up with a wonderful Cracked Magazine self-portrait I bet you've never before seen -- I haven't. We put this on one side of a special large-sized bookplate. On the reverse side (our first-ever two-sided bookplate), we reproduce nine of my favorite American Eagle covers (none of which duplicate ones in the book). -Bud

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0999/0684/7006/files/johseh-john-severin-two-fisted-comics-book-artist-1.jpg?v=1784488960
